Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 1992.
What is your primary product or service?
We hold 4 1/2 hour seminars for students from 10 to 18 in a mixture of subjects including English Literature, History, Philosophy, Grammar, Writing and some Test Preparation.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I was teaching at USC when I first began working with kids in Bakersfield and Pacific Palisades. My intention was to give them skills necessary for college, but the classes soon developed into more. Students began to start at younger and younger ages, and now stay with me from 3rd through 12th grade.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Most places teach SAT preparation. They use shortcut methods available in the test booklets. My students read and write about everything--reading novels, short stories, and essays that they would read in college over a variety of subjects which enables them to understand the language of scholars and of the university from a very young age.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
In 2005 I moved the Oxford Academy to Santa Barbara where it has continued to work with exceptional kids.
